Friday Tests

7th Grade - the weekly test for 7th grade will include adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers and finding the distance between two numbers (positive and negative) on a number line. Students received a study guide (their review sheet of the last test) to take home tonight. The test will be similar in nature. A review website can be found at http://www.purplemath.com/modules/negative2.htm.

6th Grade - the weekly test for 6th grade will include items using ratios to compare part to part of a group, and part to whole ratios. Students should study from their homework tonight (a worksheet) and their class notes. Class notes were to include three examples done and reviewed in class, as well as how to convert decimals to percents. For a review website, go to purple math.

Great Website

Today's 7th grade practice CRCT had a question for a unit that we have not yet covered. But in thinking ahead, I looked for resources to help with this topic (slicing solid figures - geometry). This website www.learner.org has a great interactive animation to help with these concepts. We will use it when we get to that topic, but it may be fun for your child to start looking at it now.

Update

I apologize that there have not been recent posts. My 1-year-old son was hospitalized last week for 5 days, and I have gotten behind a bit. This week, we are taking practice CRCT tests in both 6th and 7th grade. This is not part of your child's grade, but is a tool for us to measure where we are and how far we have to go. Students had homework assignments last night and will have them every night this week. 6th grade homework for Monday was pages 42-47 in the CRCT practice book, and 7th grade homework was to do pages 44-47 in the CRCT practice book.

We will review this practice test tomorrow (Thursday), present the answers to students, and discuss the whole class results (without revealing individual performance). I will then discuss the plan for the remainder of the year with the students, and communitcate that plan to parents with the creation of a syllabus for the remainder of the year.

Students will soon have access to the Georgia Online Assessment System where they can take practice tests online and get immediate feedback. To get a preview of this site, go to https://www.georgiaoas.org/servlet/a2l. As soon as students have passwords, I will send them home so that students can get additional practice with multiple choice items. Additionally, I will be able to review and comment on the online tests.

Thank you,
Mrs. Svenson

New Website Link

Hi - check out this website link that reviews our lessons on adding and subtracting negative numbers. The homework tonight is to review past Friday's worksheet and answer the question in the box at the bottom of the page - "In your own words, explain why subtracting a negative is equal to adding the positive value of that integer." Very few students completed this assignment for today, and should have it complete by tomorrow.

The homework for tonight is to list five everyday situations for which positive and negative numbers represent gains and losses, respectively.

6th Grade Homework

We are beginning a new Unit, Bits and Pieces, which will focus on fractions, decimals, and percents. The homework tonight is for students to bring in an artifact (like a newspaper or magazine clipping) showing a decimal, fraction, or percent used in everyday life.

6th Grade End-of-Unit Project

The end of Unit Project for Prime Time was assigned on Tuesday, October 27, and is due on Friday, October 30. The students each chose a number between 10 and 100 that they will describe using the mathematical terms and concepts in this unit. A rubric totaling up to 50 points was given to each student to use in gauging their progress as well as grading the completed projects. The projects can take the form of a poster, booklet, song, Power-Point presentation or other approved media. Students worked on this during class on Tuesday and Wednesday, and will also have class time on Thursday to complete their work. Students are expected to have all work in class every day. Please email me with any questions at denise.svenson@imagineschools.com

7th Grade End-of-Unit Project

The seventh grade end-of-unit project was assigned on Tuesday. It involves a multi-part problem called "BATHTUB". Each student has a copy of the problem, and we have worked on it in class Tuesday and Wednesday. Based upon the progress that I have observed, students will need until Monday to complete the project, which was originally due this Friday. We have solved several aspects of the problem as a group, and clues and guidance have been given on the other parts. Presentations can include, but are not limited to posters, booklets, and Power-Point presentations. This project is suggested by the Georgia Department of Education for 7th Grade Mathematics. Please email me with any questions at denise.svenson@imagineschools.com

7th grade math

Today, we had a small test that students were not ready for on Friday. The homework for tonight is to review the test and get it signed. Additionally, students should complete any past homework that was incomplete for 'make-up' work.

6th grade homework

Today's homework is from the Investigation 3 Applications, Connections, and Extensions part of the student workbook (ACE). The homework starts on page 43. Students should answer questions 16-23, and 39-41. The core problems that all students should answer are 16-21. If students have difficulty on questions 22 and 23, they should try to get as far as possible, and bring questions to class. Questions 39-41 are Extension questions for students who need an extra challenge. All students should at least read the Extension questions and think about how they should be approached.

7th Grade

This week, we moved from relating two variables to writing one- and two- step algebraic expressions to describe these relationships. Our weekly test has been moved from it's usual Friday date until Monday. Students should study this week's problems 3.1, 3.2, (boys) and 3.3 (girls) for Monday's test.
Good work this week!

7th grade homework

Girls - pages 20 & 21, all questions.
Boys - pages 15 & 16, all questions.
If asked to make a graph, I expect students to label both variables, and title the graph. Care should be taken to create straight lines, and work should be neat.

6th grade homework

Hello - my apologies for not posting last night's homework. It was to complete page 14, questions 11. Fortunately, we had a good completion rate, as most students wrote it on their agenda sheets. Tonight's homework is to complete page 15, questions 12-18 (and 1-11 if it was not completed last night). For assistance with question 14, please so to http://PHSchool.com by entering the webcode ame-1114.
Have a good evening.

Rules of Divisibility

This will help students to factor numbers. If Anyone would like to make a new, better slideshow, so we don't have to borrow Mrs. Young's (I don't even know who she is) - I would like to post one of my own students' work.

6TH GRADE

Today, we finished presenting last week's projects, and just started our discussion on number theory. We briefly talked about prime and composite numbers, as well as factors. There is no homework for 6th grade, other than to practice math facts if necessary, or to check out one of the websites on the side bar. We had 9 girls absent today, so we will all be on the same page tomorrow. Get well, everyone!

Grade 7 Algebra

Unit 2, Patterns and Relationships/Algebra will begin on September 9.
Homework for Wednesday, September 9 - BOYS AND GIRLS CLASS - research one of the following tops and return to class with BRIEF report (1-3 sentences) on one of the following topics al-jabr, Brahmagupta; or China's or Egypt's contribution to algebra. Significant dates, regions, and people should be included where appropriate. We will be using what students bring to class to teach ourselves through an in-class activity. GIRLS CLASS ONLY (we didn't get this far in the boys' class) - page 15 and 16, problems 1-3. The coordinate graph can be done by hand, or on the computer.

President Obama's Speech to Students

Graph received

Good evening - I received a nice graph of a survey regarding ice cream flavors. - good job! If you make a graph on 'Make a Graph' - please put your name in the title so that I can give you credit.

Teacher out sick - no homework tonight

HOWEVER, I have been noticing that many students are having trouble with division because they do not have mastery of their multiplication facts. Please practice these facts with your child if he or she does not know them automatically.
